KT Tunstall - The Dawn of a New Musical Force - AmyWinehouse Finally Meets Joni Mitchell
For everything, Turn Turn Turn. Yeah well I dont know what that means but I kind of understand it if i apply it turning to KT Tunstall. She's got talent by the bucketloads and an album that I am betting on being the surprise hit of 2005. (And I dont say that very often!)
I cant help but feel that she fits into the category populated by the likes of Norah Jones, Katie Mellua, and Amy Winehouse even though KT is obviously more leftfield than those. I think it may be something to do with the fact that she has total mass appeal. Since seeing her live on Jools Holland have listened to the record (that the record company was so good to lend me!) probably about 30 times. How often does a record do that to you?
In terms of musical style I would probably come at it by suggesting that she has grown up listening to melodic rock (and subverted it subtely as this album is not cheesey) like Queen (dont belive me - listen to track 4 -Suddenly I See and you'll hear the strains of Polar Bear by Smile and Spread Your Wings by Queen) oh and maybe a little Jeff Buckley and Joni Mitchell. Dont think this is a rock album though, most of it is acoustic guitar, with simple and enchanting vocals with maybe a little rhodes here and soft bass there.
KT live is a very different experience to this record and this is really noticeable when you first hear the record but when you are living with it the walls of difference come down and its just pure KT.
Not only is is clear that KT is singin her own written songs but she is also a mean guitarist. KT has a truly beautiful warm, but with a bluesy twang in her voice that somehow transmit that emotion that so many artists dont seem to be able to.
Hailing from Scotland, KT is full of confidence - it really is hard to believe that this is her debut album. An album full of the best songwriting that is currently on offer in this country is how I would think of the wares of Telescope.
The album 'eye to the Telescope' runs as follows
Other Side of the World Another Place to Fall Under the Weather suddenly I see Silent Sea Universe & U False Alarm Heal Over Stoppin the Love Through the Dark
Watch out for KT Tunstall in 2005 and remember you heard it here first by me, Trevor Orr |
