The Human Conditions Of Richard Ashcroft
Can we start with the album, song by song and you can tell me a little about each one.
Sure.
Lets start with Nature Is The Law
Nature Is The Law was written in Mallorca in an old monastery which we rented for a holiday. I just nipped off one day because there was a piano there and I thought Id have a little play on the piano and this song came out. It's amazing, because now Brians on it and its finished and it's number one on the album, you think about what would have happened if I hadnt gone there that day.
With most of the songs I recorded them here at home on my own and mapped out what I was going to do and then I moved to another room with Chris Potter, the co-producer on the album. Then we did a map, got a little more complex, and then I took it to my core musicians and we played them live. Then the musicians go away for a while and I take the music and then I write horn parts and things and meet with my string man and it goes on again for another few months.
So Nature Is The Law started in Mallorca, came back to England, and eventually was built to a point that most people thought was finished. Then I had this vision of Brian Wilson (of the Beach Boys) and of the way my voice was quite deep and baritone and how his voice would sound wonderful in the background and
Just through luck I did a photo shoot a few days later and somebody knew his manager and this all passed on and then next minute Brians in the studio doing the track on Los Angeles and it was incredible!
The most incredible thing about it is that before Brian sang on it the end of Nature Is The Law was reminding me of early American folk music and the way we strive to straddle vast continents with our railroads and roads and how we try to beat nature but nature is always the law and, you know, the end of it was reminding me of this. Then Brian sent the track back and hes gone like ho ha and it sounds like the backs that have broken to build the railroads, you know, without any cues from me and thats a wonderful thing to happen. Theres a difference obviously in age, country, period of
but we connected.
Was it difficult to convince him to do the song?
No, I think once he heard the song he wanted to do it which, again, is a wonderful thing for me to have for the rest of my life. You know, whenever people have beaten me down and told me Im on the wrong path, Ive still got this to look back on and
well, its not like Brian Wilson is on everyones song, is it? The wonderful thing is that its not a Beach Boys pastiche or parody anyway if it was I think it would be a bit suspect. I hope nobody is expecting a Beach Boys Tune, you know! I did it for spiritual reasons and for reasons that, you know
and it happened. |
