Twilo Time with the man Vasquez
Interview with Junior Vasquez
New York club Twilo owes much of its legendary status to one man: Junior Vasquez. One-time part owner of Twilo, Vasquez is arguably the most celebrated DJ in the world with remixing credits to die for. As he releases Twilo Volume One, a collection of the club's main tunes including a bunch of his own remixes, he talks about the loneliness of the booth, how club kids ruined the scene and a famous falling out with Madonna.
What makes you the King of Twilo?
The Queen of Twilo. Let's get it right. I think it's because I had my residency even when it was Sound Factory so I really know the room. Also, I think it's my humour and the way I can put together the music: I can be very cynical or I can be very playful with it. It's not just an on-going beat all night. I like to screw around with people's heads.
Is there a key Twilo moment?
About 6am when the liquid nitrogen goes off. It looks like the whole club is taking off into outer space. Pretty brilliant. My birthday last year was the major event. It was up to 8,000 people coming in, better than New Year's 2000 and it was one of those times when I feel I'm really being loved for what I do. It's a very lonely situation 'cause I give so much and then I come home alone. Most people think I have these big after-shows at my house but I just go home spent.
