Thank God It's Haven!!

How did Haven come about?

It all started when I met Nat the guitar player in the band. I met him in a record shop in Penzance and we were both actually looking at the same record. It was a weird experience because I was almost convinced that nobody else had heard of the Quiksilver Messager Service and to meet a guy who was a guitar player and knew about the Quiksilver Messager Service - well it was almost meant to be I suppose. We started hanging out and started to write songs together.

When you say that you write songs together - does that mean that you and Nat write all the songs?

Yeah that's mainly how it works, you know I'll have some words and maybe the basis of a tune. Then me and Nat will sit down and just kind of play it to death to see where it goes. That's generally how it is and obviously we'll go to the rehearsal room where Jack and Iwan will stamp their personality on the song.

So the end product is a band effort then?

Yeah totally.

So whereabouts are you from then - Cornwall or Manchester?
It's quite weird really because Nat is the only guy in the band who's from Cornwall. Myself and Iwan are both from London. The truth is we're from lots of different places and we all kind of came together in Manchester. Jack's a Manchester lad himself.

How long have you been together now?

Currently the band I am with now, we've been playing together only for about three years. I've known the lads for about five years now. It wasn't until we all moved to Manchester that we decided to have a proper go at it. We had a residency at Night and Day and we noticed that people were taking an interest and more and more people turned up. I suppose it was then that we realised that we made a pretty good racket (laughter).

I saw you perform down at the Water Rats, it was a really good gig. It was really instinctive like you all knew what you were doing and really tight...

Well, you spend a lot of time with someone and you get to know them inside out. I think that has been the case with us. Playing together is what we're really all about and I suppose there's not a lot that needs to be said because we all kind of know where we're at and what we're doing. It's a nice feeling and I guess it only comes from such close times where you are spending time playing with each other.

So do you ever fall out at all!

Not really but we have had our moments. It's generally when there's Remy Martin or Jack Daniels involved (laughter). That's generally when the arguments start! We're no strangers to good drink!

And that can't be a bad thing...
