Ooh La La Here's Ilya!
J :Who died for beauty?
F: Its not to be taken literally, its more like a theatrical flamboyance a tongue in cheek sort of thing. Its part of the theatre of it. And like a lot of our lyrics theres a lot of weight in there but also humour. Its like a slogan, creating an image of big colours.
J: Do you see yourself as a logical progression of the kind of Bristol tradition of music.
F: God no. never even thought of it like that. I mean I can understand why people say theres a familiarity with the Bristol sound, but sometimes I think, if we were from Birmingham, would people say the same thing. So no, I dont see us as a progression, just as doing what we do.
J: What was it like when you got signed?
F: We signed nearly two years ago, and that was quite gob-smacking. We had no idea there was so much interest in us, you know, we were being wined and dined by various record companies, and we later chose to sign with Virgin. We felt like wed fit in with the other music on Virgin and they seemed to really get the music. But you know, we never set out to get a record deal at that time, we just fell into it.
J: Ok, the single Belissimo, how influenced are you by the continent, because it sounds to me like Italian?
F: Um, its funny, because most people are influenced by the American styles, and I didnt know why, but we are really influenced by the sounds that come from Europe. You know, French pop and German poetry. Especially Nick and myself, because weve been working together for so long now, its just something weve absorbed.
J: Tell us a bit about the video.
F: Well, its directed by the Guard Bothers and stars Martin Freeman (from The Office), and its just a really simple story, told really well with some brilliant acting. The guys who were in it, had to do so little with their faces, but they still told so much of the story! We loved it, and it seemed to fit the song perfectly. Its a fantastic video, and I actually think The Office is brilliant!
J: Did you not want to star in the video?
F: No, were not actors really. I didnt mind at all, very happy actually. Were looking at doing an animation for the next one, and its gonna be really surreal! Not appearing in videos adds an air of mystery as well I think.
J: You mentioned an animated video there...
F: We dont know about that yet, at the minute were just playing with ideas.
