C Melanie Speak to the Raft

J: Do you regret going on Channel 4’s ‘The Games’?

Melanie: I have no regrets. You know what...it was a great experience, I learned a lot about some sports I’d probably never have played, and it was all for charity as well, I was raising money for Cancer Research UK...so it wasn’t in vain! Also, I had doctors with in seconds so I was in the best place for it to happen!

J: How has it affected the single?

Melanie: Yeah, well we had to put the single back, then we thought about the whole performance side, and decided to go with Melt as a double A-side, which I think is a good thing because Melt is a great song, and it and ‘Yeh Yeh Yeh’ contrast very well. I’m looking forward to doing both of them!

J: So are you saying you put on Melt because it’s a slower more introspective song?

Melanie: Yeah, it was our thought at the time, because when I was laid up in hospital, we just didn’t know how I was going to progress with the leg, and it just seemed like a good idea to have a ballad there in case I did have to sit down to perform, because I’d look quite ridiculous sitting down singing Yeh Yeh Yeh (giggling). But you know, how it’s worked out, I was in Belgium at the weekend and I did four songs, including Yeh Yeh Yeh and that...I hobbled around the stage

J: The video for Melt, is it quite retrospective?

Melanie: The thing is with the Melt video, because it was quite late in the day, I wasn’t really in a fit state to go out and make a big old video, so we got some footage that we had, then we did a bit of filming so it was a bit of a homemade DIY video, but it’s turned out really good, so I’m really pleased.

J: How did that contrast with the YYY video?

Melanie: We shot that one with Ray-Kay in Norway, and we shot for two days, and his stuff is fantastic. We had a really fun shoot being a performance video, because I hate all those intricate kind of flashy video that you have to kinda think about...I like them when they just reflect the song. And I love to perform and I think it’s my strong point so I wanted to do a performance video.

J: Have you worked out what you’re going to do with regards to live dates?

Melanie: We decided we had to cancel some of the dates because when we were on the German leg of the tour was real tour you know, we were out there with the tour bus, doing three nights on, one night off and it was just a bit too much for my knee, and it seems silly to put my health at risk when I can tour again. And I’ve had lots of messages on my website from the fans, how understanding they are of everything
