Stephanie Kirkham comes back for more

A: Tell us about the next single ‘Garden of Dreams’

S: Ah, well, it was about someone who I was close to, and they were moving away. It was the first night that they were away, and it’s like, the first night is the hardest, because after that it’s gonna get easier. It’s just about making a wish really, and wondering if they are wishing the same thing.

A: So it’s a happy/sad song?

S: Yeah. A garden of dreams is where your imagination can be free, and you can plant the seeds of your dreams...and you know, see what grows and what happens. So it’s about the freedom of your imagination.

A: The video for the song looks very stylish, but simple; so it’s in keeping with the song using simple imagery to portray simple emotions. Were you happy with the outcome?

S: I was really happy yeah. It was the same director that shot the last video for ‘Inappropriate’, Katie Bell. We had such a great day on that. with being out in the country, but for this one, we thought we needed to bring it into a more urban environment really, because you’re daydreaming about outside of there, and you’re stuck in this very sort of sparse lonely environment being on your own, and the phone not ringing. So, it’s not as colourful, but I like it, I think it really fits the song.

A: Are you getting used to seeing yourself on the telly and hearing your songs on the radio?

S: I am getting a bit more used to it...but it’s still strange though. It’s like getting up and singing in front of everybody, it’s a bit nerve-racking but the more you do it the better you get. This whole thing is still like a new job for me really; you know, writing, I’ve been doing for ages but everything else is still new to me!

A: So you feel like your confidence is growing?

S: Yeah it is...thankfully!

A: You’ve been likened to Dido and Nora Jones. Does that make you feel under pressure?

S: No, I don’t feel under pressure from what other people are thinking...I mean it’s natural that people will try to put you in a box, because I’m a girl for a start, so I’m already in that box, then other boxes. No, I don’t, because it doesn’t matter if those people have existed or not, because I’m just doing what I’m doing, I can only do what I do, and it might work or it won’t, but at least I’ve done it my way.
