The Brothers Gonna Work It Out...
So how does it feel to be looking back on a ten-year career?
ED: We don't mind it at all, we're proud of the music we've made. The new compilation doesn't feel like a bad move, it's actually given us a different way of hearing our music. The singles sound more 'jumpy' and alive, whereas on the albums they're usually more mixed and polished. We're really happy with the record that's there, and making the two new tracks has given us a lot of inspiration - putting them alongside the other songs has been a great experience.
Do you feel that there's a coherency to the album?
TOM: Yeah, that's what made me feel good actually. It's strange, the music we made ten years ago in my bedroom fits perfectly with the new stuff. Other bands tend to disown their earlier music, whereas for us it's always been part of same thing. It's almost like we were trying to reach for the same ideas that we've been reaching for since. It all makes sense together...you can tell it's us two making the records, not outside producers shaping it all.
But has the recording process changed over the years?
TOM: Not massively, not as much as you might think. We use the same instruments, and it's still just us sitting in the studio trying to make things up and get ideas together. Just trying to make a great record, really! We had that impetus even at the start...we still have it now, even though we have more keyboards and computers.
Did you ever think you'd be in this position ten years down the line?
ED: No! It never occurred to us. I'm glad it's happened, though. I'm glad we've had such a...rich musical heritage! When we first started, we didn't really have big horizons. But we just kept on releasing albums, and they've always been good, so...no reason for us to stop, really! Time marches on...
Is there a feeling with the album that you've wiped the slate clean?
TOM: Yeah, it's really liberating. The worst thing would've been to try and make a fifth album straight after "Come With Us". This has given us a lot of freedom, and the two new pieces of music have given us a real burst of enthusiasm. We can make music that surprises and excites us as much as when we started. I mean at the end of the day, we're still just friends having fun.
Has your relationship changed at all?
ED: No, not really!
TOM: We're still just stupid idiots...it would have been better if it had developed! |
